What Is the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) in Ontario And How Do You Apply?

What Is the ADP?

The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) is a Government of Ontario initiative that helps people with long-term physical disabilities pay for the customized equipment they need to live safely and independently. Funded through the Ministry of Health, ADP covers up to 75 percent of the approved cost of eligible devices meaning most qualifying applicants pay only 25 percent out of pocket. For many Ontario families managing ongoing mobility or health challenges, this program can mean the difference between affording the right equipment and going without. Courtice Home Health Care is a registered ADP vendor, which means we are authorized to process ADP claims on your behalf and guide you through the entire process.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for ADP funding, you must be an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario Health Card and have a physical disability that requires the device on an ongoing basis generally meaning the condition is expected to last one year or more. Beyond residency and health card requirements, you will also need authorization from a registered ADP authorizer, which is typically a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or physician who can confirm your need for the device in writing. It is worth noting that ADP covers a specific list of approved devices, so not every piece of equipment will qualify but the program is broader than many people realize.

What Does ADP Cover?

  • Manual and power wheelchairs
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Orthotics and prosthetics
  • Hearing devices and communication aids
  • Pressure relief mattresses and seating cushions
  • Respiratory equipment
  • Visual aids and low vision devices
  • Enteral feeding equipment

How to Apply Step by Step

  • Step 1: Speak with your doctor or therapist about your need for a device
  • Step 2: Your healthcare provider completes the ADP application as a registered authorizer
  • Step 3: Visit an ADP-registered vendor like Courtice Home Health Care to select your device
  • Step 4: The vendor submits the claim to the Ministry of Health on your behalf
  • Step 5: You pay your 25% portion; ADP covers the remaining 75%
